Mitchell Alexander "Elec" and Lucy Metcalf Wilson

According to his grave marker on Indian Creek, Mitchell Alexander, or "Elec", Wilson was born on April 22, 1823. Various records consistently record his place of birth as North Carolina and his son's (Levi Wilson's) birth certificate specifies the county of his birth as Yancey. While this latter evidence conflicts somewhat with census data, which records the Wilson family in Yancey County for the first time in 1850, it appears certain that Elec was born somewhere in North Carolina after his parents, John and Susannah Wilson, arrived in the state from Virginia.

About 1845, Elec Wilson married Lucy Metcalf, the daughter of the Rev. Jacob Metcalf (1802-1882) and Elizabeth "Betsy" Buckner (1804-1891). (For a complete Metcalf family history, see Old Buncombe County Heritage, Volume 1, articles 470 and 535-A.) It is unfortunate that the exact date of their marriage was lost when certain county records were destroyed by fire. Lucy was born in Madison County, and the couple resided on Indian Creek in Prices Creek Township, Yancey County, near the Madison County line.

The family home was a typical log cabin, located on the top of "Elec Branch" which feeds into Indian Creek about a mile up from Paint Gap. Elec Wilson was a farmer and, according to census data, was literate-a skill not taken for granted in those days. One story passed down through the family is that Elec liked to pick up curious and pretty rocks and bring them home where he placed them between the logs of his cabin walls.

Elec Wilson is documented in every federal census between the years 1850 and 1900 and the history of his family is discernible from those records. Elec and Lucy's oldest child, Reubin M. Wilson, is identifiable from the 1850 census which lists him as 4 years old. However, family members today have no recollection of Reubin and there are no other records of him after 1850. It is assumed that Reubin died before 1860.

Lucy and Elec's second child was Thomas W. Wilson, who was born in February 1848. Thomas married Louis P. Moss on July 8, 1867. Louis, who was born in Yancey County in August 1852, was the daughter of Benjamin J. Moss of South Carolina and Elizabeth Carr of Georgia. Thomas and Louis had several children in Yancey County, before moving to Dawson County, Georgia in the late 1870's. The family was in Union County, Georgia by 1900 and appears in the Gordon County, Georgia census for 1910. It is unclear where the family resided after 1910. Thomas and Louis had a total of eleven children.

Sarah Ann Wilson was born about 1850. Family tradition states that she first married a man by the last name of Ingle and had two sons (one of whom was named Wiley). She married a second time to Smith Riddle, the son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth Riddle, on December 17, 1892. She had two more children with Smith: Walter Lee and Lillie Bell Riddle. Sarah died sometime in the 1910's and Smith died in the 1920's. The two are buried together on Horton's Creek in graves marked with field stones.

Jacob H., or "J.C.", Wilson was Elec and Lucy's fourth child, born in April 1852. Jake married Rhoda J. Ray on October 31, 1875. Jake and Rhoda had five children before her death in 1892. Jake remarried to Martha Jane Styles, the widow of John Washington Silver, Jr., on March 4, 1894. Jake and Martha had three sons: Ragan, Hobart and Charlie. Jake died about 1916 on Cattail Creek in Pensacola Township and is buried on a hill behind the old elementary school. His grave, next to Jules Garland, remains unmarked.

Nelson W. Wilson was born about 1852. He first married Martha Sawyer and resided in Madison County, where the couple had eleven children. By 1910, Martha had died and Nelson had remarried to Lula Victoria Chrisawn (1886 - 1960). This couple, whose age difference was almost 35 years, had eleven more children. Nelson died in 1927 and is buried with his second wife, Lula, on Indian Creek behind the old Levi Wilson house.

Levi W. Wilson was Elec and Lucy's sixth child and was born in January 1857. He married Leona J. Shepherd on March 12, 1876 and had eleven children. Levi is mostly remembered for his kindness and neat appearance. He died on May 1, 1933 and is buried with his wife and other family members behind his old home on Indian Creek.

Margaret E. Wilson was born in 1861. She had the dubious honor of being the bride of George W. McCurry (1859-1937), whom she married on March 7, 1880. George McCurry was an infamous character in the history of Yancey County and has been the subject of much discussion. Contemporary newspapers described him as, "[A] terror not only to Yancey County, but to many other counties in Western North Carolina and adjacent parts of Tennessee..." (for more on the deeds of George McCurry, see News From Yancey, ed. Dr. Lloyd Bailey, Yancey Graphics, 1983, pages 65-73.) George is remembered by the Wilson family as being a wild, "red-haired Irishman" (although he was actually of Scottish descent). The couple resided on Jack's Creek. Margaret died in 1912.

Ragan W. Wilson, the eighth child of Elec and Lucy, was born about 1862. According to family tradition, Ragan grew a "black mustache long enough to put over his ears, and he never smiled." On April 10, 1894, he married Ellie Maney, the daughter of John and Cornelia Maney, in Yancey County, and took her to live in Hamburg, Madison County, where he owned a sawmill. Tradition has it that Ellie got a little "friendly" with some of the mill workers which provoked Ragan to bring her back to Yancey County and leave her there. Ragan is not listed in the 1880 or 1900 North Carolina census (the census for 1890 does not survive) but he seems to have remarried by the 1910 Madison County census where he appears with "Pollie M.," both of whom are 50 years of age. Ragan and Polly appear in the 1920 Madison County census, both aged 59 years.

Brigetta Wilson was born about 1864. Little is known of Brigetta, except that she married C.H. McCourry on September 25, 1881, according to Yancey County records. Marcina Wilson was the last child of Elec and Lucy and was born about 1871. She married Peter B. Rice and the couple appears in the 1910 Madison County census with three children. Family tradition states that the family later moved to Jack's Creek in Yancey County.

Lucy Metcalf Wilson died an untimely death shortly after the birth of Marcina, and is buried somewhere on the top of Elec Branch. The exact date of Lucy's death is unknown, but she was alive when her father wrote his will in January 1874 and was dead by the time Elec remarried to Sarah Lucrecia "Lou" Maney on March 20, 1876-placing her death in either 1874 or 1875. Her grave, which was originally marked, is now lost as the gravestone was removed many decades ago.

Elec and second wife Lou Maney (1841-1919) continued to live at the top of Elec Branch and raise Elec's small children. In the mid-1890's, Elec's health began to deteriorate and, according to tradition, he eventually was forced to stop working. Unable to earn money, he began to have trouble paying even modest debts.

Over time, Elec ran up several debts at a local store operated by Joe E. Robeson, which was located at Paint Gap where Horton and Indian Creeks meet. Unable to pay his debts, Elec was occasionally forced to sign over significant portions of his property, including his home, to Joe Robeson to settle his account. Robeson's personal receipts reveal that Elec signed over his home and surrounding land in March 1896 for a mere ten dollars worth of goods which included wheat, fodder and corn. Yancey County Deed Book 21 (pages 70-71) shows that Elec transferred this property to J.E. Robinson on April 1, 1896. Just four days later, on April 4, Robeson's records indicate that he acquired yet another piece of Elec's property for five dollars "in trade." Tradition, as passed through the family of Elec's son, Levi, states that the Wilson family was very upset about this loss of property and felt that Joe E. Robeson had taken advantage of Elec. Records suggest that Robeson may have had an eye on Elec's property at an even earlier date, as his store receipts show that he had acquired land from J. M. Ray in January 1896 which had previously belonged to Elec.

Having lost his property, Elec set up home with Lou on Indian Creek about a mile up from their old home on Elec Branch. Their new house, which was actually a converted barn, was located just behind the home of the late Mrs. Mae Ball Maney. (Mae Ball Maney was related to Lou Maney and lived on Indian Creek from 1910 until her death just a few years ago.)

Census data reveals that Lou Maney and Elec had a child but, unfortunately, it had died by 1900. This child, who apparently died as an infant, was their only baby. Family tradition states that the infant is buried with Elec and Lou on Indian Creek.

Towards the end of 1905, Elec was near death. Charlie H. Wilson, Elec's grandson, remembered that his father (Jake Wilson) had received word of Elec's condition and had left Pensacola to visit him on Indian Creek. A few days later, with Jake and other family members at his side, Elec died in the couple's make-shift home on January 18, 1906. Lou died on October 19, 1919. The couple is buried together on a hill about a half-a-mile down the creek from their former home.

Mrs. William Gregg
'In the early summer of 1881 Alice Eliza and William Gregg started 'West' (from Iowa) with their four children, the emigrant train consisting of about twenty wagons. The Gregg family occupied one wagon with all their possessions, including keepsakes and clothing. Their only treasures; their four children, James, Mary Jane, William, Jr., and Olive Myrtle; their wealth, the wagon and team of two bays.
Many and thrilling were the events of the trip told by one of the children, now grown and herself a grandmother; of floods encountered and farm houses washed away; fording of streams swollen by recent rains; the wild game so different to any ever before encountered and numerous other but highly entertaining experiences. Settlement in Wyoming was finally made on Sand Creek, on a ranch owned by James Cantlin and at the site of the present Buzzard Ranch. Later they homesteaded six or seven miles down the stream.
Three other children were born in Wyoming: Mayme, Gertrude and Charles. Mrs. Gregg was a woman of happy and optimistic disposition, hardworking as were most of the pioneer mothers who resided on the ranches and with little besides necessities in the early days-a splendid manager. The family moved to Casper in 1891 and on October 12, of the next year she was killed in a run-away accident on Bessemer Flats, near the famous 'Goose Egg' Ranch. Mr. Gregg, who married again, is a resident of Worland, WY.'
(Note: in 'Recollections of Myrtle Chalfant Gregg' it is said that the Gregg's were moving to be nearer school when Mrs. Gregg died. 'Something scared the team and they ran away. Alice had Gertie (then 5) get back in the wagon or maybe she was riding there. Anyway, her mother told her to jump out, but she wouldn't. Then in going down into a low place the wagon tongue came down and stuck in the bank. The wagon was up-ended and both thrown out. Gertie had a scratched chin. The doctor said Mother Gregg had scarcely a bone that was not broken.' She died several hours later.)
'Of the family of Mr. and Mrs. Gregg, the oldest daughter, Mary Jane, is a resident of Casper. She was born February 9, 1875 and married in 1893 John Heagney, son of another pioneer family and Wyoming.
Mrs. Heagney is a woman well and favorably known in Casper where she has resided for so many years and where she has served her community in many capacities. She is a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, having served as its President and member of the Executive Committee. Her eligibility was established on the service of her youngest brother, Charles, who enlisted in Company 'C,' 148th Infantry, later being transferred to Battery 'G' 139th Field Artillery. He saw service in France. She is also one of the seven members of the Casper Board of Charities; of the Neighbors of Woodcraft; Women of Mooseheart Legion; Altar and Rosary Society and of the Roman Catholic Church. Mr. Heagney has been in the employ of the Nicolaysen Lumber Company for many years.'
