Early Riddles in Virginia and Maryland (1623-1664)
As reported by Doratha Riddle Marsh in her book, the "Branches of One Riddle Family Tree", a census of those living in Virginia, dated the 16th of February 1623, shows a Sara Riddall.  Based on Marsh's research, this is the first Riddle to settle in North America.

As also recorded by Doratha Riddle Marsh in her book referenced above, in 1635 William Riddle came to Virginia from London, England, aboard a vessel commanded by Captain Leonard Betts.  Robert Ridley also came in 1635 and settled in Isle of Wight County.  By then the population had grown to 5,000.  Although Indian raids continued, settlements were established along the rivers of the lower Tidewater. During the next 28 years three more Riddles arrive in Virginia:
1651 - George Eaton transported, among others, a James Riddle to Rappa River, Virginia.
1652 - John Riddle was transported to Virginia by Mrs. Elnor Brocas, wife of Capt. William Brocas.
1663 - Edward Riddle owned land in Elizabeth City, Virginia.

In 1664, Robert Riddle was transported to Maryland from England.  Robert is believed to be the first Riddle in Maryland.

Sep. 10, 1717 Maryland State Archives CR49-521,1739-1743, Page 469-471. John (Ridle) Riddle Prince George's County, Maryland petition agent of management of Land Affairs within Province of Maryland paid fee for 50 acres of land called Poplar Thickett. Hugh Riley had already been granted 100 acres of the Original Poplar Thickett under New Rent by Sundry Median Conveyances Alienation and Mutations of Possession Act. This petition was sent to London.

Dec. 15, 1738. London still had John Riddle's petition on file and his fee. They resurveyed and found vacant land. John Riddle and his heirs were given 63-1/2 acres on May 17, 1745. The Addition to Poplar Thickett and additional land. Son John Jr. owned this property until his death in 1794. Son Zachariah, administrator sold this property in 1795.

Note Hugh Riley was given 100 acres of Poplar Thickett under The New Rent Act.
18 Oct. 1716 Hugh Riley and wife Rebecca sold 100 acres of Poplar Thickett to John Prather Jr. and Thomas Prather. the property was at the north end of Friendship Manor of Calverton.
Index 55, Drawer 3, 9 Sep. 10, 1717, John Riddle bought from John Prother 50 acres which was part of Poplar Thickett.
John born 1680's now owns 2 tracts of land. 63-1/2 acres of The Addition to Poplar Thickett and 50 acres of Poplar Thickett.,

NOTES: The film was read and marriages transcribed, alphabetized by surnames then the birth section was transcribed and the children placed under the parents' names by me. If the parentage was not obvious, the children and the parents listed in the film were listed as separate entities. The film was not completely clear on all the dates and some of the children's names were not given but where there are questions as to the correct date, name, etc.

      St. Barnabas Church
I found the following records on Basil Riddle, together with others of his family, in Saint Barnabas Church, Queen Anne Parish, Prince Georges, Maryland:

Parents are listed as John and Elizabeth Riddle. The date span between the various children's births makes me doubt that this is all one family. I will put down what I have, for what it's worth. It seems to go along with some of the List messages this week about Jeremiah and George Riddle as well as Basil.

Children - parents always listed as John & Elizabeth:
      John Riddell b. 25 Jul 1708
      George Riddell b. 10 Sep 1710
      John Riddle b. 16 Nov 1734
      George Riddle b. Jan 1735

      (female) Riddle b. 1743
      Basil Riddle b. 1759

The will of John Riddle (father of John, Jr.) was made in Prince Georges Co., MD Aug. 19, 1745 and recorded May 20, 1746 (Liber 24, Folio 402). It names his wife, Elinor; son, John; and daughter, Elizabeth Linton. “Maryland Marriage Records”, Annie Walker Burns, undated, “Eliza Riddle, daughter of John & Eleanor of Prince Georges Co., married George Linton.” This wrong. Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Margaret Riddle. [1, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10]
