    • Johnís middle initial is derived from his son John W. Riddle Jr.

      John Riddle was ordered to be released from paying poll tax in 1784 due to being under age. Usually 20 years.

      Surry Co. NC Court Minutes Vol. 1 & 2 1768-1789 by Mrs W O Absher. pg. 134 Randol RIDDLE (and John) jury to mark road if necessary from Va line near William WEBBS to Rockingham county line near Abraham MARTIN's 16 Feb 1788.

      John Riddle and Benjamin Hawkins were awarded a grant to 200 acres located on the waters of Mill Creek adjoining William Hawkins' land. They paid 10 pounds per 100 acres. John's land was located near Raccoon Creek and Hawkins Mill Creek, 36d 28m, 80d 07m (1557 Delta Church Rd, Sandy Ridge, North Carolina 27046). John and Randolph Riddle lived about one mile from each other in the northeast corner of what is now Stokes Co. The Grant was issued on Dec. 10, 1790 or 1791.

      John sold his land in Stokes Co. on 9 Oct 1802 (Stokes Co. Deed Book #4, page. 228-229).

      He moved to what is Yancey Co. (Buncombe Co.) during the period of 1803 to 1805. Buncombe Co. had been created in 1791 from parts of Burke and Rutherford Counties.

      John purchased land on the Cainey (Cain), now in Yancey Co., from George Wilson on 7 Jan 1805 (Buncombe Co., Deed Book A, pg. 55).
