  • Notes
    • The Rev. John Allen was called "Bull Tongue" because of a fiery tongue/temper.  He was pastor of the Can River Baptist Church in Yancey in the late 1800's.  He lived on Paint Fork and would travel on horseback to the church.  On his way back, he often would stop at the Wray Villa (near the mouth of Prices Creek) in order to purchase household staples (coffee, salt, etc.).  He would sometimes trade "moonshine" liquor which he had received in payment for holding revivals.  Sometimes he got into quarrels at the Villa, thus justifying his nickname. The Elders of the Cane River Church held a meeting to question his behavior and finally asked him what he had to say for himself.  his reply was, "You are supposed to do as I say, not as I do."  John is buried in the cemetery across from the church, with his two wives and in front of his father. GrannyAmy originally submitted this to Blalock Mathis Tree 2009 on 10 May 2009
